DESCRIPTION: John Joyce, Ruthin, Wales, musical three train tall case clock, 8 days, time, strike and musical weight driven movement playing one of seven tunes (including a hymn on Sunday) every four hours on eight bells and single bell hour strike with painted cast iron pendulum bob. The case is a high styled mahogany veneer case with carved rosettes on broken arch, three carved urn finials with flame tops, dental moldings, fluted columns flanking dial, inlaid banding surrounding doors, fluted quarter columns with brass Corinthian terminals and matched crotch mahogany veneers on trunk with matching raised crotch mahogany panel on base with fluted columns on base resting on ogee bracket feet. The painted metal dial is signed by maker, "John Joyce Ruthin", and has seven tune selector subsidiary dial, sweep center calendar and beautifully pierced hands.
CONDITION: the case retains an old finish rubbed down and waxed. The trunk is door is warped but will close and lock. The key is absent. There is a vertical split on the crotch mahogany base. The feet, hands and finials are original. This is a nicely proportioned original example in the formal English style of a period musical tall clock.
